PLACES TO GO & THINGS TO DO
Twynholm village is centrally located within Kirkcudbrightshire and adjacent to the A75 Carlisle to Stranraer road which gives easy access to many of the interesting places around us.
Galloway is an ancient Kingdom comprising of the two counties of Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. These counties combine to form the south western tip of Scotland on the northern shores of the Solway Firth. In Kirkcudbrightshire the coastal landscape soon gives way to the gently sloping Southern Upland Hills, and in Wigtownsire there are the Machars and Rhinns which are low lying and varied.

There are many relatively quiet little coves and bays along the shore near us where you can relax, or enjoy sea angling, sailing and wind-surfing. In the hills Forest Enterprise has created a great number of walkways, cycle routes and bridleways all of which they actively encourage visitors to use fully. Our roads remain relatively quiet, and our many coastal byways are excellent for cycling on. Cycle Route 7 passes close to us at Twynholm too.
There are numerous golf courses - both 9 and 18 hole - not far from us. Our mild climate makes many of our gardens unusual and these are regularly open to the public in their season. Tourist Information leaflets for these are available in the cottage, as are details of many other attractions and events.
Whilst most essentials can be bought in the small shop next door we are well served locally with a full range of mainly family owned shops in the neighbouring towns. Only 10 minutes drive away is our county town of Kirkcudbright. Now promoted as The Artists' Town it was long the home of a group of famous artists who came there to take advantage of the quality of light and scenery, and is still home to many contemporary artists and craftspeople with a range of galleries and outlets. It has a working estuarine harbour and its shops are varied and quite comprehensive. During the summer months the town hosts its Summer Festivities programme with a range of events being held every week.

A little further away is Gatehouse of Fleet which is much smaller, but it has a proud heritage, a range of excellent places to eat and visit, and great riverside walks to enjoy.
Our market town is Castle Douglas about 15 minutes drive eastwards along the A75. Castle Douglas has long been a centre of excellence for food production, particularly of high quality locally produced beef and lamb. The town now markets itself as The Food Town and it offers a particularly exciting range of places to shop and eat.
Theme towns are popular in Galloway. Scotland's Book Town can be found at Wigtown - the county town of Wigtownshire - which is only about 45 minutes drive west from us. On the way there the town of Newton Stewart is passed and this too is worth a walk through with its range of shops and riverside walks.
So whatever your interest - whether you are looking for a quiet relaxing time in attractive and unspoilt countryside or an activity holiday on coast, hill or forest or if you enjoy wandering through our variety of small family run shops - our area of Galloway has much to offer you.
COME AND ENJOY IT. We will make you very welcome.
